Opportunities for Improvement/Clarification for the Sustainable Community Indicators Report

Wednesday February 8, 2012

The SEDI Sustainable Community Indicators Report is receiving accolades around the community.  This decision-support tool is a means to measure our movement towards accomplishing community objectives. We hope to follow up with a second study which will report on the progress we have collectively made.

Are there other metrics we should include in the next survey? Are there sectors that could use more measurements? Should different measurements be included? Find an error in data?

We are anxious to receive suggestions to make this indicators report even more responsive to the needs of policy makers, businesses, organizations, and individual community members. Please comment below and contribute to the community conversation.

Overall comment: Data for Coconino County is very broad and really goes beyond the area that we serve. Could we extract data that is more specific?
    P. 8 Hispanic population is not called out because it describes race, not ethnicity, as collected by the census.
    P. 12 Text talks about the relationship between higher education and health (is that healthy?) outcomes, then we show indicators related to primary education which does not flow well.
    P. 12 Education –Citing only FUSD and not including County or charter schools does not accurately represent the K-12 population.
    P. 13 English should always be capitalized
    P. 14 Graduate degrees and undergraduate degrees noted, wraps in all NAU campuses, not just the Flagstaff campus
    P. 14 HS graduation rates noted are for what area? Is it FUSD, Coconino County, Arizona?
    P. 15 Enrollment Change chart: Freshmen is spelled with an “e”
    P. 15 Northern Arizona University Mountain Campus Enrollment should reflect Fall enrollment, not Spring enrollment.
Preferred moniker is “Flagstaff Campus” not “Mountain Campus”.
NAU enrollment change. Does this number represent “entering class” or does it include “returning freshmen”?
General Graphic Observation: Line graphs generally show the point and the year at the vertical point of measurement, not in between measurement points. It would be less confusing to follow normal conventions in the future.

More emphasis needed on agricultural metrics
More emphasis needed on food production and security metrics
